Ferrosilicon is an ferroalloy composed of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is a kind of ferrosilicon alloy made from coke, steel scraps, quartz (or silica) as raw materials by electric furnace smelting.

Ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking because silicon and oxygen are easily oxidized to form silicon dioxide. At the same time, because of the large amount of heat released during the formation of SiO2, it is also beneficial to increase the temperature of molten steel while deoxidizing. At the same time, ferrosilicon can also be used as an additive of alloy elements, and widely used in low alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel, ferrosilicon in ferroalloy production and chemical industry, often used as reducing agent.

In all the applications, steelmaking, foundry and ferroalloy industries are the largest users of ferrosilicon. They consume about 90% of ferrosilicon. Among the different grades of ferrosilicon, the 75%ferrosilicon most widely used currently. In the steel making industry, about 1MT steel is consumed 3-5kg75% ferrosilicon.
